Three Journalism Students Selected as 2015 AHP Travel Award Winners
Three dedicated and talented college students stood apart from a field of 20 applicants to become 2015 AHP Student Award finalists. Their names are added to a long list of students who applied for the AHP Student Award and earned an opportunity to meet leading equine publishing professionals and discuss career possibilities during the AHP annual seminar. The three AHP Travel Award Winners will each receive $750 travel awards to attend the 2015 Tally-Ho at the Alamo Seminar in San Antonio, Texas on June 18-20, 2015 for three days of educational sessions and related activities.

Victoria “Dixie” Crowe is a junior at Colorado State University, where she double majors in Equine Sciences and Journalism & Media Communications. Dixie grew up in the suburbs of Northern Virginia where her equine background included weekly English riding lessons in elementary and junior high school as well a few western trail rides in Southern California. When Dixie decided to attend CSU for a second bachelor’s degree in equine sciences to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, a professor in humane livestock handling suggested she change her direction to writing in the equine industry.
“I have pursued journalism and equine sciences with passion since that day,” says Dixie. Her blog about animal and equine science topics appears online in The Rocky Mountain Collegian. As a freelance journalist, Dixie’s work has been published in The Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse. She is currently working on an interactive iBook project of case studies with Dr. McCue from CSU’s Equine Reproductive Laboratory.
Dixie’s long-term career goals include creating multimedia content for an online version of a print magazine focusing on health and science in order to improve the lives of horses.
Bridget Grobosky is a junior at the University of Arizona, where she majors in Animal Science-Equine Industry path and minors in Journalism. Bridget has been involved in the equine industry since she was seven years old through riding, showing and owning horses. Her career culminated in two 2013 Pinto World Championship top 10 finishes. She is currently President of the University of Arizona’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association equestrian team.
“After completing an intensive summer journalism minor program, I rekindled my love for writing and communications,” says Bridget. She is currently working for the Rillito Race Track in Tucson, writing local and national press releases. Her career goal is to work for a publishing company within the equine industry. As her experience broadens, she is also considering other communications fields such as public relations.
Bridget is the daughter of Barry and Arlene Grobosky of Queen Creek, Arizona.
Taylor Renner is a senior at the University of Georgia, majoring in Agricultural Communications with a minor in Animal Science. Riding since the age of 10, Taylor received her first horse when she was 13. She competed in the 3 ft. children’s hunter and equitation divisions throughout her junior riding career.
“I’ve gained publishing experience on campus working as a photographer for the school newspaper as well as graphic designer and photographer for the school magazine,” says Taylor. “Last spring I interned with LEG Up News and later attended the 2014 AHP Seminar in Charleston, where I was offered an internship with Sidelines Magazine. I was also able to freelance with the Pacific Coast Journal/Horseman’s News.”
Taylor plans to continue furthering her career within the equine industry by attending the 2015 AHP seminar and seeking a full time position at an equine magazine after graduation.
Taylor is the daughter of Barry and Gina Renner of Douglasville Georgia.
The three finalists will be interviewed by the Student Award Committee at the AHP seminar in San Antonio where one student will be announced as the 2015 AHP Student Award Winner at the Student Party on Friday, June 19, 2015. The Student Award winner wins a cash award of $1,000 plus an all-expense paid trip hosted by Publishers Press to one of their Two-Day Customer Education Seminars in Louisville, Kentucky. Additional cash awards will be awarded at the discretion of the judges. All cash awards are sponsored by AIM Equine Network.
The Student Award program, which began in 1993, was initiated to promote awareness to students of the career opportunities available in equine publishing. “AHP’s involvement with students is a rewarding experience for both the students and the association,” says AHP Executive Director Chris Brune. “Not only does it offer students a chance to learn about a career they may be passionate about, but it has also given equine publishing a long list of talented young people who are an asset to our industry.”
